An issue in Canada (and Western societies) that isn't being discussed enough is that the "lack of workers" might entirely be an HR issue.

HR's incompetence is leading Hiring Managers to think there aren't enough candidates for the job. I've heard of story after story of HR dropping the ball with qualified candidates. If you don't know, after you apply at large companies HR screens you first before your resume gets sent off to the Hiring Manager. The problem is that HR is incompetent and oftentimes misses meetings or doesn't pass the resume off to the Hiring Manager even when they say they were going to. HR isn't held accountable much at all. Also, the way HR screens can be entirely arbitrary. Many people are reporting that female HR managers screen men especially in a similar fashion as they would screen a person for online dating. They play similar games with showing up to meetings late, "testing how candidates react" to certain things, etc... to the point that a professional man is likely to not even bother due to the unprofessional handling of the hiring process by the HR manager. A lot of immigrants hired as recruiters are just collecting a paycheque while trying to do as little work as possible without being caught for doing no work. One issue is that when an employee isn't doing his job, you find out by the client because the client expects a level of service. When an HR Manager doesn't do their job, the potential employee rarely complains because there isn't an outlet to complain to as his first point of contact (and only) with the company is the HR person who is incompetent. Thus, HR is hardly ever held accountable.

I'm willing to bet that a lot of senior leadership at large companies are being given data from their HR departments that lead them to believe there's a shortage of labor but in reality there is no shortage, it's actually entirely an HR issue with being able to convert available skilled labor into hired employees for the company.

CaptainTroubleHow did companies ever function without an office full of unpleasant unwanted middle aged women to play gate keeper?

Can't even show up ready to work at a jobsite to try and get hired on anymore. You have to sing and dance for women who know absolutely nothing about the actual work to be done.

What does it mean to be a slave?

You don't have to pick cotton or live on a plantation to be a slave.

Slavery = living in constant fear.

The Soviet Union was mostly made up of slaves. Shut up do as you're told and NEVER push back or offer your own opinion, lest it differ from the Party.

....God (!) forbid you end up on a list and are then taken away in the middle of the night.

There are women out there that understand, but they are too afraid to speak up as they will lose all of their 'friends', social capital, their job, etc.

There are men out there that understand, but they are too afraid to speak up as they will lose their ability to provide and possible their wife and children as well.

People will put up with a lot of nonsense in their life because they fear the consequences of standing up for themselves.

Some of them have even kept their mouths shut even when their own children are abused and murdered. I hate to say it but the abuser won't be the only person going to hell in that scenario.
