CFB Wainwright explosion and fire? Casualties?

‘Significant casualties’ after explosion at Alberta military base: MP

An Alberta member of Parliament says he’s hearing there are “significant casualties” after an explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright east of Edmonton.

Dane Lloyd, who represents a riding west of Edmonton, asks in a social media post for people to pray for the soldiers and their families.

The Municipal District of Wainwright says high winds are spreading a large fire fast into the area after the incident at the nearby CFB Wainwright on Saturday evening.

Emergency responders were actively working to “protect people, property and critical infrastructure,” according to a social media post from the district.

There was no evacuation order for residents as of 7:30 p.m.

The Department of National Defence said it was closely monitoring the situation but could not confirm further details.

Officials say the fire crossed the base fence earlier Saturday and is being managed south of Wainwright.

An active fire, however, remained burning south of Township Road 44-0.

In a media release, Acute Care Alberta confirmed that Emergency Health Services were on scene for care and the transport related to the fire.
Prime Minister Mark Carney was also quick to comment on the situation, posting to social media just after 6 p.m. to inform that he and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith were in “close contact” as the response continues.

“A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta,” he wrote. “Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.”

Smith said the fire was “significant and tragic” and was affecting many military personnel.
Elections Alberta said it was informed of the fire and has shut down the Wainwright Communiplex advance vote location.

Voters are asked to instead go to Border Inn in Lloydminster or Vermilion Elks Hall.

WAINWRIGHT, Alta. – A fire reported on a range at CFB Wainwright has spread beyond the training area, the Canadian Armed Forces said Saturday.
Last updated 7:13 p.m. MT. See the update log at the end of this story.
The Canadian Armed Forces said in a statement:

“At approximately 1600 on 17 October 2026, a fire was reported on the range at Canadian Armed Forces Base Wainwright. The fire has extended beyond the boundary of the training area and emergency services are responding.

“The situation remains ongoing. The Canadian Armed Forces is working with emergency services to respond to the incident. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.”

The Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61 said the fire crossed the base fence earlier Saturday and is being actively managed. The district said the active fire area is south of Township Road 44-0.

Firefighting resources from multiple jurisdictions are responding, the district said.

There is no evacuation order at this time, said the district. Emergency crews remain focused on protecting people, homes and other structures.

Earlier, the district said high winds spread the fire rapidly.

STARS air ambulance has also responded in the Wainwright area.

In an email to BorderPulse, Natalie Hofstetter, communications manager with STARS, said:

“I can confirm STARS has responded to a scene call in the Wainwright area with our Edmonton and Saskatoon-based aircraft. I don’t have any patient related information at this time, but can provide you with an update once any transports conclude. For information about the scene, please reach out to RCMP.”

STARS did not say whether the call is tied to the fire.

Earlier, a military public affairs officer confirmed an incident on the base.

“There has been an incident on the base,” said Capt. Bechard, Canadian Support Group West public affairs officer. “Emergency personnel are attending the scene.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney also addressed the incident in a post on X.

“A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta,” said Carney. “Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.”

Carney said the federal government is working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities. He and Premier Danielle Smith are in close contact, he said, as are relevant ministers and officials.

Smith also posted on X about the fire.

“We are learning of a significant and tragic fire at CFB Wainwright today that is affecting many of our brave military personnel,” said Smith.

Smith said Alberta’s government is in close contact with the federal government and Carney as the situation evolves. She thanked first responders and those providing care and support to people affected.

Officials have not said what caused the fire or how many people are affected.

BorderPulse has learned that multiple area responders from Lloydminster are also responding.

Wainwright Fire & Rescue earlier posted a public notice on Facebook that multiple agencies are responding to a fire incident south of Wainwright. It asked drivers to give emergency vehicles the right of way.

The RCMP declined to comment to BorderPulse.

The district asked residents to avoid the incident area and not to stop to watch or take photos. It asked people to keep roads clear for emergency personnel and equipment.

It also asked people to avoid the Wainwright Health Centre unless they have a critical medical need.

The district has set up an Emergency Coordination Centre. It said official incident updates will be issued through its official channel only, and further verified information will be shared as it becomes available.

BorderPulse will update this story as information is confirmed.

My gut screams this is no coincidence!

No coincidence whatsoever!!! NOVA Gas Transmission, called NGTL, appears to have a pipeline that runs through part of an area on the base called "Permanent Danger Area 3B H1." https://www.zerohedge.com/military/...massive-gas-explosion-canadian-base-killing-7 This is more of the cabals energy sabotage war - i.e. ukraine bombing diesel refineries, global warming shutting down fossil fuels!!!

NGTL (NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd.) is a critical backbone of Canada’s natural gas system and a major contributor to North American energy supply. It is operated by a subsidiary of TC Energy and consists of roughly 24,000–25,400 km of gathering and transmission pipelines primarily across Alberta and northeastern British Columbia.

tcenergy.com +1
Importance to Canada and North America
  • Scale and role: NGTL gathers gas from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) and moves an average of roughly 15–16.8 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). It has over 1,100 receipt points and more than 300 delivery points. It is both a gathering system and a transmission network—unlike pure long-haul pipelines.

    cer-rec.gc.ca
  • Domestic use: It supplies homes, businesses, power generation, and industrial users in Alberta (including significant volumes for oil sands operations). Natural gas meets a large share of Canada’s energy needs for heating and electricity.
  • Continental connections: Gas moves from NGTL into connected systems such as the Foothills pipeline, the TC Canadian Mainline, and others. This delivers supply to Eastern Canada, the U.S. Midwest, the U.S. Pacific Northwest, California, and other markets. TC Energy has stated that one in every four molecules of natural gas across North America moves through its broader natural gas infrastructure (including NGTL). The system also supports pathways toward LNG exports (e.g., connections relevant to Coastal GasLink and LNG Canada).

    tcenergy.com +1
  • Economic and strategic value: It underpins Western Canadian gas production, supports jobs and investment (TC Energy has invested heavily, including multi-billion-dollar expansions), generates government revenue, and strengthens energy security and export capacity for Canada. Disruptions on major segments can affect regional supply and prices across North America.
In short, NGTL is foundational infrastructure for moving WCSB gas to Canadian and U.S. markets. Its importance is systemic rather than dependent on any single local segment.Connection to “Permanent Danger Area 3B H1”Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in east-central Alberta is one of the Canadian Army’s largest and busiest ground training areas. It uses Permanent Danger Areas (numbered zones such as 2, 3, or 4) as fixed impact and safety buffers for live-fire activities (artillery, mortars, field firing, etc.). These are permanent designated zones where hazardous military training occurs.

apps.dtic.mil
NGTL system maps and operational materials list Wainwright as a named location within the broader NGTL network in eastern Alberta, indicating facilities, laterals, or related infrastructure in the region. Eastern Alberta has extensive oil and gas production and pipeline infrastructure, so gas wells and lines (gathering laterals, smaller lines, or associated facilities) commonly coexist with or near large land areas, including military ranges.Publicly available information does not specifically confirm that a major NGTL mainline transmission pipeline runs through the interior of Permanent Danger Area 3B H1. The area has dense local gas infrastructure typical of the region.Recent context at CFB WainwrightOn October 17, 2026, a major fire and explosion occurred in a training area at CFB Wainwright. Media reports citing Canadian Armed Forces sources indicated that a live-fire training exercise struck a gas line or gas well, causing an explosion that spread rapidly due to high winds (gusts up to ~100 km/h). There were multiple fatalities (reports cited around seven) and dozens injured; hospitals in the Edmonton area activated high-casualty protocols. Officials described the situation as active and delicate, with an investigation underway. Next-of-kin notifications were ongoing, and the precise cause and infrastructure involved had not been fully confirmed in official statements at the time of reporting.

bbc.co.uk +1
The “gas line or gas well” referenced in early reports could involve local production infrastructure, a smaller lateral, or associated facilities rather than a primary high-capacity NGTL mainline. A full investigation will determine the exact assets involved and any contributing factors (including range safety protocols, locate processes, and infrastructure marking).NGTL’s continental importance remains high regardless of any single local segment near a military training area. Major mainline disruptions elsewhere on the system have historically affected broader supply, while smaller laterals or wells typically have more localized effects.

@DisobeyTyranny This one is crazy folks. There could be any number of conspiracy theories that come out of this. This is like a perfect storm of incompetence (incompetency is a trademark of the Liberal party).

Unconfirmed amount of dead, but even the 150+ wounded wipes out a huge amount of troops with lifelong career ending injuries. If these were all trained and qualified soldiers, and not brand new recruits from Pakistan, then they just took out a huge operational chunk of the pathetically small Canadian Army.

The government really needs to release information fast. Were the troops stacked there specifically at that date and time in those conditions on purpose? No one saw very obvious safety problems having a natural gas line next to a live fire range, is Carney going to try and downplay and dismiss this huge event?

Is the whole thing staged to just push us closer to being part of America or going to war with America or what the fuck?

Absolute transparency is what the government needs to be right now and they are not off to a good start with lots of rumors and speculation already before noon on the East coast the next day.

One rumour is a stray artillery projectile blew up a natural gas well in the training area (where it is extracted from-fucking stupid to have near a ln active range). That rapidly spread as a fire and potentially sympathetic detonations. - Some Anonymous Coward on GLP forums

Sounds like something happened but the government doesnt want to say anything specific yet, which tells us its probably the government's fault and they have to figure out how to spin it. Probably not a planned psyop, cause they would be telling us the narrative right away.

I could see it being caused entirely by incompetence. Everywhere in Canada is suffering from a huge incompetence crisis and it's so bad people don't even realize it. It's like Brave New World where people just get used to the inferiority and believe that's superiority. Every industry in Canada is no longer professional, even the professions. No one can do their job anymore. All the competent people are getting fired and being replaced with cheap incompetent labor. The military is no exception.

I can absolutely imagine that some lady officer range NCO said it would be fine to shoot incendiary rounds in the dry Wainwright prairie with high winds... Is this the end result of feminism? Women have gone so far from the kitchen that they do not know that fire spreads and causes more fire?

Carney also said they would be "welcoming" people who are not Canadian citizens to fill up the ranks in the "Canadian" military cause so many troops left after 2020. Maybe one of the "new Canadians" who was hired went postal as soon as they saw a good opportunity? Maybe we are infiltrated by any number of hostile foreign entities?

What am I saying "maybe"...

Maybe the government does not want to say shit because they know Canada is the most vulnerable part of North America and any admissions that the Canadian Armed Forces are now filled with terrorists who will attack their own troops and citizens will not play well in the US midterm elections, that is like giving Trump a steak buffet.

Defense Minister provides "update".... doesn't really say much specifically so this must be really bad.

Like I said in another thread, when the government does not give specific details we can only speculate. Did one of these "non-Canadian citizen" armed forces members that Justin and Carney brought into the country pop off with an artillery gun at the range?

Not sure how valid, but I saw this:
According to local sources on base, Canadian Forces personnel had been conducting exercises over several days when an artillery projectile reportedly struck an active natural gas well on the bombing range, triggering a massive detonation.
The blast is said to have levelled nearby tactical training buildings, with subsequent fires reaching munitions storage and setting off secondary detonations across the range.

Accounts from someone on the firing line was it was a shoulder fired HE round that "Dolphined" after it left the tube and went astray. NOT artillery.

This round hit a gas well which exploded and flattened the 3 Kill Houses that were full of troops which happened to be in close proximity of the well. Approx 300 troops inside and many waiting outside them. There is nothing but splinters left of them.

This also started a major fire that was fed by high winds that swept through the main Bivouac site housing the majority of troops in the field.

The amount of injured is staggering and the fatality count IS going to climb as they recover more victims.

In my 20+ years in the Army, I have only heard of a dolphining round happening once from a shoulder fired rocket. Not sure what would cause this other than possibly a faulty propellent.

A 100km/h (28m/s or 62mph) gust acting on a shoulder-fired munition exiting the launcher—especially when combined with degraded or poorly maintained hardware—represents a textbook convergence of failure modes that directly causes in-flight "dolphining" (aerodynamic porpoising) and catastrophic flight-path divergence.

1. The Physics of a 100 km/h Gust at Muzzle Exit

Shoulder-fired weapons have low initial muzzle velocities (V0) compared to artillery or tank rounds:
  • Typical launch speeds: An RPG-7 booster exits around 115m/s; an M72 LAW exits around 145m/s; an AT4 or SMAW exits between 220–250m/s.
  • Extreme Induced Angle of Attack: At 115–145m/s, a sudden 28m/s crosswind gust instantly subjects the projectile to a cross-flow angle of attack () between 11 and 14 the moment the round emerges into the free stream:
    $$\tan(\alpha) = \frac{V_{\text{crosswind}}}{V_0} \approx \frac{28\text{ m/s}}{115\text{–}145\text{ m/s}} \implies \alpha \approx 11^\circ\text{–}14^\circ$$
  • Violent Weather-Cocking: Fin-stabilized rockets act like wind vanes; their large tail surface area forces the nose to swing violently into the wind.
  • Fin Aerodynamic Stall: Flat, thin folding fins stall at angles of attack between 10 and 15. If the gust hits the projectile at exit, the fins on the leeward side can stall out aerodynamically, causing the restoring moment (the force designed to keep the rocket straight) to collapse.

2. How Poor Maintenance Magnifies the Failure

In benign range conditions, a minor mechanical defect might cause a near-miss. In a 100km/h wind field, even subtle maintenance defects turn fatal:
  • Sluggish or Asymmetric Fin Deployment: Folding fins rely on spring hinges, detents, or gas-deployed linkages. If a launcher or rocket tube suffered from moisture intrusion, dried lubricant, sand/grit, or corrosion:
  • One or two fins may deploy fractions of a second slower than the others, or fail to lock fully perpendicular to the airframe.
  • In calm air, the rocket might wobble briefly and stabilize. In a 100km/h cross-shear, that momentary asymmetry produces an immediate, massive rolling and pitching couple that the remaining fins cannot counter.
  • Propellant Grain Degradation & Off-Axis Thrust:
  • If the munition was aged, stored improperly in extreme heat/cold cycling, or dropped during transport, micro-fractures develop inside the solid propellant grain.
  • When fired, internal combustion becomes uneven, eroding the nozzle throat asymmetrically. This displaces the thrust vector away from the round's center of gravity (CG).
  • A misaligned thrust vector actively pushes the tail while the heavy wind gust is simultaneously slamming the nose into crossflow.
  • Tube Tip-Off & Worn Launch Seals:
  • Worn bore surfaces, degraded forward diaphragm/weather caps, or loose detent catches impart an erratic pitch or yaw rate (known as "launch tip-off") at the muzzle crown.
  • Instead of leaving the tube in clean, axial flight, the projectile tumbles into the wind at an already elevated pitch angle.

3. The Mechanics of the Resulting "Dolphin" Flight Path

When these two factors collide, the round does not merely drift; it begins a cyclic dive-and-climb:
  1. Initial Pitch-Up / Slew: The crosswind and asymmetric fin drag whip the nose off-axis into high angle-of-attack flight.
  2. Fin Stall and Over-Correction: As the fins stall and recover while the projectile rolls along its longitudinal axis, aerodynamic lift alternates rapidly from top to bottom.
  3. Thrust Vector Coupling: If the sustainer motor is burning during this oscillation, the rocket's thrust pushes it along whatever instantaneous direction the nose is pointing, turning a mild pitch oscillation into an aggressive, undulating wave through the air.
  4. Trajectory Divergence: The rocket exhausts its kinetic energy fighting its own destabilization, losing aerodynamic control entirely and veering wildly off the target line until it hits the terrain or an unintended structure.

Range Safety and Weather Envelopes

Live-fire range safety regulations (such as DA PAM 385-63 and NATO STANAG range directives) generally set strict weather abort thresholds for shoulder-fired unguided rockets:
  • Surface Danger Zones (SDZs) for shoulder-fired rockets assume normal wind conditions (typically capped around 25–30km/h, or roughly 15knots, with strict prohibitions on firing in gusts exceeding 40–50km/h).
  • Operating shoulder-fired munitions in 100km/h gusts (near-storm force on the Beaufort scale) completely invalidates the weapon's calculated dispersion fan, placing any infrastructure, bivouac area, or personnel downrange or adjacent to the firing lane at severe risk.
Over the last 12 hours (spanning Saturday afternoon and evening, October 17, into early Sunday, October 18, 2026), Wainwright and east-central Alberta were hit by a severe windstorm:
* Peak Wind Gusts: Maximum gusts across the Wainwright area and broader region reached up to 100 km/h (approx. 62 mph or 28 m/s).
* Sustained Winds: Sustained wind speeds through Saturday afternoon and evening generally tracked between 40 and 60 km/h, shifting across the south and northwest sectors as the frontal boundary crossed the region.
* Impact & Overnight Trend: These near-storm-force gusts were severe enough across eastern Alberta to topple trees, blow down signage, and rapidly whip the catastrophic fire across CFB Wainwright south across the base perimeter line before winds began to ease slightly late Saturday night (around 11:00 PM MDT).

So, basically... Incompetence, if this story is to be believed. Too much misinformation out now. The training exercise should have been called off because of wind but it wasn't and now hundreds of people will pay the price. Also, we're going to have months long investigations when the answer was known hours later by some random dude on the internet. Typical peak Canada.

Interesting. I wonder if it was a Carl G, I got my Carl G qual when I was infantry (before I grew a brain). I remember having 2 people on the weapon, loader and shooter.

I remember shooting the training 7.62x54 tracer round, the concrete round and the high explosive round. That shit slaps you when you fire it like a giant hand of God over your whole body.

Also, something I wish to bring up. If it's true the exercise should have been called off because of wind but wasn't, instead of it being incompetence could it also be because of Canadian arrogance?

Essentially, from what I've heard is that Canadians were training with Americans in Alaska and the Americans called off the training for their own troops because it was too cold but the Canadians wanted to show how tough they were and 30 soldiers ended up getting frostbite so bad they lost toes and fingers. The Canadian government is busy trying to cover up this story. Could Canadian arrogance have also caused this catastrophe?

Mass casualty incident right in time for the referendum vote and showing how super duper dangerous those pipelines are eh.

Sorry guys, we can’t expand our natural resource production! Remember what happened in alberta on that military base?
Sorry guys, we can’t have a referendum vote right now. Remember what happened on that military base? It would be a bad look, maybe another time.

Accident? Incompetence? Sabotage? Timing is impeccable.

Oil and Gas assets in the area

The NOVA gas line that is mentioned earlier in this thread is further south east. Everything in the local area is the gathering lines carrying gas from the wells to a central compressor station. These wells are Viking / Colorado gas wells, pretty low rate and overall "shitty" wells. I can't speak as to what they do at Wainwright, but at Suffield the well head and pipeline connection is in a steel caisson below grade and covered with steel doors so tanks can drive right over them. You would have to be violating several range rules to be lobbing mortars or larger at a well and then get really lucky to hit it.

Also further fuel for the conspiracy fires.... These wells are owned by Sumerian Oil & Gas Inc, and they received a Suspension order on October 5th to shut in production for concerns about their ability to care for the wells.

Yeah fucking right. The weekend before a referendum to leave Canada? Sounds like someone is trying to send Alberta a message. 100% engineered and not a chance of coincidence.

Something I've noticed about a lot of government psyops is that they don't necessarily do anything on purpose. Instead, they create conditions that have a high probability of leading to the result they want. They don't order a hitman to assassinate Trump. They find some guy with mental health issues, give him weapons and encourage his ideologies. Then, the guy tries to assassinate Trump. The security detail happens to be a bunch of worthless DEI hires. Also, something in the deep state's control. Basically, setting up a situation in which they didn't directly "do" anything but where they created conditions to get the result they want.

Poorly maintained equipment combined with an incompetent Singh as Range Safety Officer and some military wind machines we don't know about creating perfect conditions for an incident. Government has complete deniability they did anything. Instead, it was an accident. When in reality the government created the exact circumstances for this exact result.
