On September 22, 2026, Canada’s Big Six banks issued a joint statement saying they are exploring Canadian-dollar digital money, starting with tokenized deposits. The banks are Bank of Montreal (BMO), CIBC, National Bank of Canada, RBC, Scotiabank, and TD. National Bank’s press release says the project “seeks to deliver faster, more efficient and programmable payments to Canadian customers” and that the first phase “aims to move tokenized deposits efficiently across Canadian financial institutions,” with a longer-term goal of connecting to other digital-asset initiatives. Other deposit-taking institutions may join later.Coverage from Bloomberg, CoinDesk, American Banker, The Globe and Mail, and others matches that account.Important limits:

- The banks said they are “jointly exploring” development, not that tokens are built, live, or available to customers. No commercial rollout or timeline was given.
- These are tokenized deposits: digital representations of ordinary bank deposits on a shared ledger, still liabilities of the issuing bank. Canada’s regulator, OSFI, said on September 10, 2026, that tokenized deposits are not legally distinct from traditional deposits. They are not a central-bank digital currency or a private stablecoin.
- The first phase targets efficient movement between institutions, not necessarily instant consumer transfers between personal accounts. Instant or near-instant, around-the-clock settlement is the stated aim of the technology, not a current service.
