Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suggested that the country can begin a "controlled increase" of Canada's population, claiming that Canada's immigration system is now under control.
The comments were made to the New York Times during an interview covering a whole range of issues. He made the remark just over a month before Canada's government is required to release its immigration numbers for the upcoming year.
“Now the question starts to become, when do we resume some controlled increase in the population, which is the nature of Canada?” he told the reporters. “So that will happen, and we just want to make sure that we’ve got it under control.” In July, Carney claimed that Canada had "taken back control" of the immigration system after there was enormous growth in the population under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Officials in Canada had planned on increasing the annual number of admitted permanent residents to 500,000, but in 2024 and 2025, the country started to decrease its immigration numbers. "What we’ve basically been doing is first getting the system under control. So if we want to let in 500,000 people through formal immigration and some temporary workers and students, we cap things and we let in 500,000 people. There were years where the expectation would have been for example, 700,000, and it ended up 2 million. The overshoots were, and you know it’s a country of 40 million people," Carney said during the interview.
The most recent immigration level plan called for 385,000 admissions of permanent residents in 2026 and 370,000 in 2027 and 2028, per CityNews.
The CD Howe Institute has recommended that Canada continue to shrink immigration targets over the course of the next three years.

I assume carnie is looking at a spreadsheet of Canada's future with a reality where immigration is zero and growth is zero or even negative with the greying population. Because of course Canadians don't really innovate, and our western way of life doesn't even have a future so we feel obligated to bring in an alien one. The guy is sitting in a no-win situation politically

No, he's not. That's you rationalizing how he's thinking because you think he's ultimately a good guy who wants what's best for the country with the cards he's dealt. He isn't. He just wants to improve the profits of the big corps while he plunders Western civilization for all its worth because he doesn't care about Canada whatsoever.

Canadas aging population is not a problem. Old people die and they can't fight very well. You simply stop non-White immigration, deport the nons, cut taxes, cut government spending to social programs and then reduce government bureaucracy such as regulations surrounding GHG emissions and then scrap the Indian Act and expropriate Native Indian land. Quality of life of Canadians goes up, despite all the old people. He just wants to keep the Ponzi scheme going while destroying Canada and Western society so him and the tribe can benefit.
 
@CaptainTrouble I assume you know you are lying and are saying this intentionally. Declining demography virtually guarantees gdp shrinkage as this is how you end up with countries entombed in decades of stagnant, declining returns like Japan. This is a big metareason why all western politicians in power have begun the replacement agenda. somebody is showing them a graph of what happens if they decide to sit on demographic trends and how they will go on to lose elections. Someone like Carnie probably isn't thinking more than one step ahead, and therefore is thinking how you say. Bar goes up, otherwise we lose the next election. I didn't say he was thinking about the welfare of the country.

The problem is that nobody has shown him the other graphs, which will show that a nonwhite Canada with changing majority composition demographics is inevitably going to become an IQ 85 failed state riven by race based infighting and another failed third world country. The elites have horse blinders on and cannot see the reality of how the simple story they are told, people in bar goes up, simply isn't true because the assumption that all people are equally talented isn't true.

You're right that Canada has forcibly handicapped itself with political dogmas that reduce productivity and waste the surplus, we would get a significant short term boost to competitiveness by gutting all that. But it is still on the slow boat to Japan until the demographic profile of the Euro Canadian population is rectified. Pretending otherwise is to deny the framing which is actually driving these politicians.
 
Canada's economic problems are easily solvable. It's political problems can't even be nudged in the right direction.

Only real way to make it run properly is to fold it and start over again.

Mark Carney loves capital above all else, joining the states is simply good for business but not politically tenable at the moment.

Watch Mark Carney get the elbows up crowd to cheer on becoming American only after he has pilfered the finances of every man woman and child in the country.

Logical consistency has never been a concern for the population here. Just as soon as becoming American is framed as being the better financial option for the 55+ crowd it will happen almost overnight and anybody who opposes it will be a traitor.

Wouldn't even let the average Canadian step on my porch.

When asked about a statement this week where Stelco Holdings Inc. announced they were laying off 500 workers from their steel plant in Hamilton, Ontario, immediately Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney blamed the United States.

He’s lying. It’s ridiculous. However, that’s all Carney can do at this point.

In reality it is (1) Canadian energy, climate and manufacturing policy; in combination with (2) the specific decision to allow the import of cheap steel from China; in combination with the decision to (3) rebuke U.S requests to stop purchasing that Chinese steel; that has driven out Canadian steel manufacturing.

(1) Canada carbon emission policy changes steel manufacturing. (2) Canada admits to lying about the import of Chinese Steel. (3) Canadian steel manufacturers warn Canada of pending exit. Mark Carney denied all three points. The receipts are in the links right there.
