Canadian planemaker Bombardier responded to President Donald Trump’s threat to ban the sale of its jets in the U.S. by touting the “tens of thousands” of American jobs it has created, after Canada’s retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on some U.S. goods went into effect.

I had no idea alcohol apparently was so important to the world economy.

It is the latest escalation in a trade war between the two countries, and comes as Canadian retaliatory tariffs on US goods come into force.

The US is banning a slew of Canadian products, including alcoholic spirits, dairy goods and motor vehicles, as Canadian retaliatory tariffs on American goods come into force.

In a series of executive orders on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said that Canada is "discriminating" against the United States and outlined the import ban, to begin 29 September.

Earlier on Tuesday, Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a video address that his country's pivot away from the US as its largest trading partner "will come at a cost".

If that were to happen, Canada’s real gross domestic product would fall by 1.6 per cent, or $402-billion, over the next decade relative to the status quo baseline – U.S. tariff levels as of July 1 of this year and USMCA intact. It projects employment would shrink by 163,000 jobs annually on average, dragging wages and consumer spending along with it.
