"Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years," wrote President Trump in his latest social media outburst, laying out his tariff torrent against Canada.

"Their ridiculously high tariffs on our Farmers and farm products has made life impossible for these great American Patriots, and has long created a 60 Billion Dollar Deficit between our two Countries.
Not sustainable, and NOT ANYMORE!"

The US implemented a new 50% tax on imports of hundreds of Canadian items including furniture, plastics, plywood and electrical equipment on Saturday.

It’s such a high rate that it may cut off the world’s biggest market for some Canadian enterprises.

And now this morning, Trump unveiled more products will face dramatic tariff increases come the start of next year...

"On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small. Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50%.
Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS.
Canada will be treated like a State no longer!
On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with.
They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON'T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!
They do 95% of their business with the U.S., with us, the exact opposite!"

Carney’s government has pledged financial help for businesses caught in the crossfire. That may prove more complicated than previous aid packages for industries like steel that have been facing US tariffs for more than a year.

The new tariffs are “very diffuse, and they hit, in particular, small and many medium enterprises in various parts of the country and in radically different supply chains,” said Matthew Holmes, chief of public policy at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

“Very difficult for the federal government especially to create a package of supports for them.”

Canadians may have wanted their prime minister to stand tough and not sign a bad trade deal with the US; but the collapse of talks, and the escalation of the tariff war, will come at a price.

He said remove all tariffs and the US would do the same. Even conservative Canadians are bitching about this. They seem to think it's A-Ok that Canada can charge America tariffs, but it's not fair when America does it.

Just like to steal aluminum and metal and stuff. The deal would have made the tariffs for Canada 25% and people were bitching about that. It's like assholes. That's what you fucking charge America.

Also he keeps mentioning farmers over and over again. So yeah this fell apart because of supply management. So like always Quebec adds nothing to Canada but just hurts it.

And even have to do. They think it's okay for them to protect their market but not for the US to do the same.

Here's a problem though. Trump doesn't want this fixed steel aluminum cars. He wants that shit in the US. He made that very clear. You either move production to the US or Canada opens up and takes our farmer supply or go fuck yourself.

The tariffs the US was going to charge Canada for lumber steel aluminum was the same thing Canada charges.

Actually they were going to move lumber though only 10% and some of it was going to be free.

0% tariffs for the USA and Canada under Canada's current structure benefits the USA more than Canada. "Free trade" benefits the country with a competitive advantage for production. Between Canada and the USA (now), the USA has a competitive advantage on producing everything. Canada simply has access to resources the USA needs. The USA is smart to say 0% on everything because it's to their advantage. The issue with Canada is our lack of production capacity due to high taxes, high regulations, low human capital (stupid people live in Canada) and inefficient government spending (social programs). High tariffs doesn't actually make Canada better, but it might ensure that Canada has the advantage over the USA in a zero-sum comparison yet Canada would likely as a whole benefit from 0% tariffs more than high tariffs. The liberals are trying to "beat" the Americans and bring Canada down with them because they don't care.

In reality, what our leadership should be doing is accept 0% tariffs then lower our taxes by 95%, cut government regulation and make Canada have a competitive advantage over the USA for production. Then, Canada wins with 0% tariffs and the USA loses. But our leadership won't do this because they enjoy all the worst aspects of what makes Canada, Canada: high taxes, social programs and lots of bureaucratic oversight.

Canada is such a terrible country run by terrible people full of idiots who don't know any better. The competency of our leadership and the voters who vote for our leaders makes Indians look like clean train conductors with journeymen electrician certifications.
