Canada Border Services Agency officers descended on a weeks-long international student protest in Calgary on Wednesday, checking immigration statuses on the ground — and 12 of the 20 people screened have been flagged as "possibly inadmissible" to Canada.
The protest, camped out at Saddletowne Circle since July 24, was organized by international graduates who say they were wrongly denied post-graduation work permits. Many had attended Portage College under the impression they'd qualify for work permits after graduation — until IRCC denied their applications. Similar protests and hunger strikes have been running in Edmonton.
Calgary Police called in CBSA after complaints about noise, blocked sidewalks, and disturbances. What started as a check on four people escalated: two were out of status, and CBSA did a broader sweep of the crowd. The 12 flagged individuals were ordered to report to CBSA offices for follow-up interviews and now face possible removal orders under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
Immigration lawyer Jaskaran Sandhu says those referred could be forced to leave the country. The protest site is now empty.
