UPDATE -- (1 person arrested in shooting death at a homeless encampment from March)

On June 13, IHIT investigators arrested 39-year-old James Jared Yake of Abbotsford.

He has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm for the homicide of 69-year-old Wayne Versfelt of Abbotsford.

Investigators believe this was an isolated incident involving the victim and the charged who knew each other.

OPINION -- (Surrey Police Union president explains how woke the Surrey Police Board is)

From the earliest days of SPS, Chief Chappell helped ensure Indigenous history, culture, ceremony, and understanding were meaningfully infused into the organization. He introduced cedar brushings at our swearing-in ceremonies. He led Circle of Understanding training for members. He helped implement the Cedar Award to recognize healers, guardians, and providers within our organization and community.

These felt natural and soon became part of SPS. They were not symbolic gestures; they shaped the culture of our organization.

At a time when reconciliation has often been challenging, complex, and at times contentious, for police organizations, Chief Chappell was able to influence our members in deeply positive ways. He helped many of us better understand the history of the lands we police, the responsibilities we carry, and the importance of approaching public service with humility, respect, and openness.

SHOOTING -- (Unoccupied car shot at)

Officers were called to the area of Central Avenue and 133 Street shortly after 2 a.m., where they found a parked vehicle damaged by gunfire.
The vehicle was unoccupied

SHOOTING -- (US Border Patrol shoot person in park bordering Surrey and USA)

...the U.S. Border Patrol was involved in a shooting at the corner of 4th Street and A Street. The site is adjacent to Peace Arch Park.

“There is no threat to the public,” the post noted.
“the subject was injured and transported to the hospital.”
(This happened in the USA. I won't be adding this to the YTD count)
