Honda is CANCELING it's $15B EV plant in Canada. The Honda plant was part of the failed $52B Liberal plan to shower manufacturers with subsidies to develop the industry here. Honda will make EVs and hybrids it needs in Ohio instead where it can do so on one production line.

If a business needs a subsidy, it means the business idea isn't profitable so it shouldn't be engaged in. Instead of subsidies, the government should lower taxes.

Are most subsidies just the government saying they won’t tax you as much, rather than actually giving out money?

Yes and no. There's also the issue of who pays the tax to fund the subsidy compared to who received the tax break but the biggest issue with subsidies is that they're choosing a specific business and/or specific product/service for the subsidies which is picking winners/losers (corruption and inefficient). Lowering taxes doesn't favor one business over another if it's a straight reduction of taxes where promotes more competition, is more efficient and leads to less corruption.

@TOPDAWG
Pretty much every western government was giving subsidies for the final retail price of electric vehicles. Majority had either cut these subsidies or going to soon. Tesla was given bunch by both States and Federal government as infrastructure development for the charging stations.

@Thinker I don't mean Tesla I mean to biden administration was going to build their own charging stations if I remember correctly. Thank you AI. That's a lot of money for very little.

The number depends on what you count as a “charging station” versus individual “charging ports.”

By mid 2025, the federally funded programs from the Biden administration had produced about 68 charging stations with 384 charging ports across 16 states, according to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report.

That’s from the $7.5 billion EV charging initiative created under the 2021 infrastructure law. Biden’s stated long term goal was 500,000 public chargers by 2030.

A lot of the political argument comes from different people using different definitions:

Some critics said only “7” or “8” stations were built early on in the rollout.

Later reporting showed the number had grown to dozens of stations and hundreds of ports.

The administration argued the program was still in early stages because states had to approve plans, bid projects out, upgrade power infrastructure, and meet federal requirements before construction.

So the most up to date widely reported figure is:

68 stations

384 charging ports

as of April 2025.

DisobeyTyrannyRemember when Stellantis received $10 billion in subsidies from the Liberals and then moved their plant out of Onterrible and into the USA and got to keep all the subsidies because MP Joly never actually got a lawyer to read over the contract? That elbow has got to hurt bob!

the whole industry is collapsing country wide and the people who took the government money are probably laughing on the beach right now.

Ouch. This was supposed to be a ton of jobs for a town without much going on.

How does one get an EV subsidy? It seems like they hand them out to who ever announces a plant, then never asks for the money back when nothing happens. It seems like a free money no brainer to me.

Once the subsidy is announced, we rarely get any updates. The two giant battery plants we're subsidizing in Ontario has one posting major losses and the other Volkswagen battery plant doesn't open until 2027.

They will do just enough so they do not have to pay anything back and do not break the contract, if they even signed one with the government. What happened to that vaccine plant they were going to build in Quebec? Nothing, that is what happened.
