CTV acknowledges there are likely to be enough signatures to force the independence referendum

With about six weeks left to collect signatures, supporters of Alberta independence are working to gather enough names on a citizen-led petition that could trigger a province-wide referendum on whether Alberta should separate from Canada.

But even if the campaign succeeds and a majority of voters backed separation in a referendum, constitutional experts say the vote would only begin what could be a long and complicated process of negotiations with Ottawa, the provinces, and Indigenous nations.

Errol Mendes, a professor of constitutional and international law at the University of Ottawa, said the path to independence would involve significant legal and political hurdles.

“At every single stage, from the time they passed the referendum and somehow managed to get past the two fundamental qualifying issues, at every stage of negotiations, there’s massive barriers to ultimately Alberta becoming an independent state,” Mendes said.

You mean Ottawa won't just rubberstamp this?

Do you think the government might kick the can down the road? Are they known for doing that?

@brutana_dilewski i do and i also understand resolve and will.

Feel free to be negative and doom all u wish but i cant help but feel bad for u.

Get outside and jog or something, eat better and take care of yourself. When u feel bad inside your own skin then all you can do is doom.

Take the wegovy. I know a few heavy as fook people that are on it and they are getting skinny very quickly.

U arent living anyways dooming all the time. Fast 7 days. Then when ur comfy fast another 7. Comfy fasting is the new jello. Every one loves jello

@d01tg0d0wn I appreciate the 'concern' but this isn't about me or my life, I notice that you like to make things personal because your take on things is not based in reality.

Albertans really want this referendum to result in separation because it appears easy and low effort. (Just sign a form and tick a box come voting time) The problem is the federal government isn't going to allow this to happen.

Maybe instead of asking me to take weight loss drugs, you should be recommending that ALBERTANS get in shape and ready to sacrifice, because if they really want self-determination, they will have to fight for it.

@d01tg0d0wn

I don't care about your ad hominems, and frankly it's disappointing that you can't actually refute my argument.

Hopefully once the AB referendum fails Albertans will realize they have to grapple with reality. Unfortunately there are people running around selling lies to people, thinking they can vote their problems away. We don't live in that world anymore (if we ever did)

@brutana_dilewski i did refute u. U r upset about inside outside reasons but i forgive u. Its hard trapped in there but u will pull through if you can only find the will to

Beat the dead horse of depression and doom all you want. Its amusing and sad

With all the hype on X and elsewhere, there should be like half a million. If they meet the signature threshold just barely, it would be kinda disappointing.

People laughingly dismiss it, like someone I know in Calgary. ‘Never gonna happen’.

???
I never had any doubts that they won't get enough signatures. I have my doubts that they will get more than the "Forever Canadian" petition from last year. Maybe you should open your eyes when reading.

I mean, we could make a little bet if the get more 400k signatures ...

@RightOfSask “list”

What are they going to do that won’t galvanize support to leave and undermine the legitimacy of the fed government nationwide? Unbank supporters? Disappear leaders? Mass arrests? Any use of force in going to have a US imposed no fly zone over Cold Lake, Moose Jaw Gagetown and have the 82nd airborne in centre block in under and hour. Not to mention have Carney fall out of favour with the UN and Liberal Eurocrats back home which isn’t going to do his speaking bookings any good.

Other option is bribe - but the country is broke. All the current bribes have to go to the existing cronies to stay in power. So the existing graft pie can’t go elsewhere, be split smaller or expand.

If this confederacy thing isn’t completely voluntary Then what is it? The only word I can think of is bondage.

@Arpeggiator is correct. People don't realize how fucked Ottawa is if the 30% of the population they alienated under Covid congregates under a shared political grievance narrative and start moving away from the system. With numbers like that, it's possible to simply ignore the government and begin civil disobedience. It's possible to get a new country. The more the system attacks us, the worse the social inflammation will get. We should simply declare independence anyways, we have the cards right now
