when i was a teenager, my buddy had an apartment downtown in the city. I would sometimes stay there overnight when I was visiting the city.
He had this neighbour next to him that likely had mental issues - if he heard a loud noise (like thumping or banging) he would kick the wall separating the two apartments really hard.
When my buddy told me this, I didn't believe him. Then he demonstrated - in his bedroom, he took a single steel toed boot and let it drop from shoulder height to the ground, which produced a tiny 'thud' noise when it hit the thinly carpeted floor. Within 10 seconds, his bedroom wall shook with the impact of something kicking the separating wall 3 times.
Looking back, it probably wasn't something to make fun of - but being the stupid teenager that I was, I began dropping items on the ground in various spots to see what would happen. The neighbour never disappointed me.
