Pearson Airport urges Ottawa to approve digital ID for travel

Toronto Pearson International Airport’s push for federal approval of digital identification and biometric screening for air travel is drawing sharp criticism from civil liberties advocates.

we all know this is a bad idea, but fack. we recently went through pearson for the first time in years. that place is an absolute fucking international embarrassment. my favourites from the above:

Carpay argued that the current travel verification system already incorporates digital technology, such as online check-ins and QR-coded boarding passes, and questioned what problem Pearson’s plan is trying to solve.

“When things are slow at the airport, it’s not because of a lack of electronic technology,” he said. “We already have pre-registration and QR codes. What’s missing isn’t digital tools—it’s proper management.”

The GTAA maintains its plan is focused solely on improving efficiency and competitiveness, not on government surveillance. It argues that digitized identity verification would help streamline screening and border procedures, ensuring “Canada remains a forward-thinking, globally connected nation.”

if you want to improve pearson, maybe hire people who speak english fluently and arent diversity hires? that would go a long fucking way to improving shit.

The issue is jeet airport security. You can’t tell me we need better ID for passengers when the entire airport ‘security’ apparatus is third world.

what i found quite interesting in our travels, was that at the three other international airports we were in, all of the customs officials and the vast majority of airport staff were culturally homogeneous and took a certain level of pride in their professional bearing. watching planes being loaded, everything was ran like a clock.

pearson? its a fucking joke and embarrassment. we had a two hour delay leaving, to which we sat and watched the diverse ground crew fucking around, having fun times...def living their best lives. and why was our plane delayed? oh yes...no gate available for the plane.

coming home, the computers "just went down," so the less than competent staff had no actual plan to get people through customs in a timely fucking manner, even though i'm sure this isnt the first time this sort of shit had happened...they looked like deer in the headlights. absolutely no leadership or backup plan, other than to just keep us moving through a pointless, endless queue, since nothing was actually being checked. international visitors were shocked that the staff could barely speak english when asking them about what was going on/what to do/ etc..

and the customs agents? fucking disgraceful. it might sound like a little, pointless thing to bitch about, and def points to my age, but idgaf...it really grinds my gears when any motherfucker in any uniform leans or slouches. stand/sit the fuck up straight and do your fucking job.

The last time I had to fly through Toronto International (I refuse to call it "Pearson", dagnabbit) I was coming back from South America and connecting through to Halifax. It was 5 am when we landed and the weather outside was 25 degrees Celsius with smog, which seeped through the cracks in the jetway and made me feel like I was suffocating as I exited the plane. The first advertisement I saw in the corridor after disembarking was entirely in Chinese, and when I went through customs one of the all-Indian staff sneered at me, "welcome home" -- it was obvious from his expression that he meant it to be mocking. What an absolute nightmare
