AfD Candidates Die Before Election

Four candidates from Germany's Alternative for Germany (AfD) party died suddenly and unexpectedly in the weeks leading up to the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) local elections on September 14, 2025, sparking widespread concern and speculation online. The deaths occurred in the municipalities of Blomberg, Rheinberg, Schwerte, and Bad Lippspringe, prompting election officials to invalidate previously issued mail-in ballots and rush to print new ones. The AfD party has not publicly commented on the incidents, and authorities have confirmed there is no evidence of foul play, with no police investigations launched.
  • Ralph Lange (66): Died unexpectedly in Blomberg, becoming the first of the four AfD candidates to pass away, which invalidated ballots in that district.
  • Wolfgang Seitz (59): Died in Rheinberg, with his death reported as sudden and unexpected, leading to the invalidation of ballots in that area.
  • Wolfgang Klinger (71): Passed away in Schwerte, also under unexpected circumstances, requiring the reprinting of ballots for that municipality.
  • Stefan Berendes (59): Died in Bad Lippspringe, with 133 voters in the district needing to recast their ballots after the original ones were declared invalid.
The cluster of deaths has led to significant online discussion, with economist Stefan Homburg describing the event as "statistically almost impossible" on social media, a post that garnered over a million views. Despite the lack of evidence for foul play, the deaths have heightened concerns among AfD supporters, given the party's status as the most targeted political group in Germany, facing assaults and other forms of violence according to official statistics. The situation remains under close scrutiny as the election deadline approaches.

Nothing to see here. No police investigation needed.

Surely this has a Nuclear Streisand Effect—when you ban parties, forbid posting on X and kill men because you fear what they will say.

Thing is it sets the precedent for the same action to be returned to them. They will lament the violence on other party candidates while ignoring the obvious assault on a democratic process. In other words they pave the road for an authoritarian emergence that will put nooses on their necks but only because they did it first. It will end up being a self fulfilling prophecy at that point.
