Poignant Reminder of European defiance against Ottoman armies.
The Carnival of Naoussa (Soldiers and brides) is celebrated yearly to commemorate the resistances of Greek Janissaries. Taken from their parents as an Ottoman blood tax, Janissaries were Christian boys mainly from Hungary and the Balkan states. The Christians were raised as Islamic Ottoman soldiers against their own people. They were regularly beaten and molested by their Muslim slave keepers. Greeks commemorate the janissary slave revolts by dancing with scimitars and mocking Muslims. Historical context available in the book Defenders of the west by Raymond Ibrahim.
