Quebec's post-secondary system includes CEGEPs (pre-university and technical colleges, roughly equivalent to grades 12–13 plus some vocational programs) and universities.
- For Quebec residents (Canadian citizens or permanent residents who qualify as Quebec residents):
- CEGEPs (public ones): Full-time students generally receive free tuition. This has been the case since the 1960s. Students pay only incidental/registration fees (often a few hundred dollars per semester for things like student services, health, etc.). Part-time students may pay some tuition.
- Universities: Tuition is not free, but it is very low compared to most of Canada and many other countries. Quebec residents pay around $3,000–$4,000 CAD per year for undergraduate programs (e.g., recent figures show about $3,963 for undergrad in some reports, with per-credit rates around $100–$200 plus fees). This reflects long-standing government subsidies and policies that keep rates affordable (and historically low due to freezes or modest increases).
