In the interest of public safety, the Calgary Police Service is issuing the following public information and warning in regards to the release of a high-risk offender.

Corey MANYSHOTS, 36, has completed a federal sentence for kidnapping, sexual assault causing bodily harm, robbery, and uttering threats, and will be residing in Calgary.

MANYSHOTS is described as approximately 5’8” tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

MANYSHOTS will be bound by court-ordered conditions, including the use of an electronic monitoring device, and monitored by the CPS High Risk Offender Program (HROP).

The Calgary Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation and consideration of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community of the release of MANYSHOTS.

Members of the public are advised that the intent of the process is to enable members of the public to take suitable precautionary measures and not to embark on any form of vigilante action.

I'd like to imagine this snippet is a canary, that if/when it's missing the police are effectively giving the green light.

What type of precautionary measures are citizens allowed to take other than staying away from any and all public spaces where this guy might be hanging out? We can't carry a gun for self defense because the intent is "to cause harm" (even though that might be the only way to protect yourself). Same goes for any other self defense "weapons" and tools.

All we can do (given the legal issue of not being able to carry obvious self defense tools) is;
-sharpen your street smarts
-take self defense/martial arts classes
-get a dog if you don't have one already
-have common objects like a pen or keys on hand or in your pocket, ready to go

You can still carry knives and pepper spray. Just do not give a reason why you are carrying them when asked. I do not know is good enough answer majority of the times and police do not usually push.
