Meanwhile, you ask these same immigrants what they think about immigration in their home countries and they almost always oppose it.

That's not true and it's a piece of the convo that also needs to happen but many people aren't caught up to this part of the convo on immigrants yet. Studies in Europe show there's a reversion to the genetic mean on second generation+ immigrants so even if you let in smart, competent, good virtue first generation immigrants, once those immigrants have children, the offspring of these immigrants tend to revert to the average nature for those people and in the case of non-White Europeans they on average do worse than domestic White Europeans after the mean reversion.

That means there's actually no such thing as a good immigrant unless they are White Europeans. Only I think Japanese/Korean were close to White Europeans for second gen immigrants that they could be passable.

Like so many other things... it's a balance. You need fresh blood and fresh ideas to thrive. If you turtle up and have a completely closed off society, you will get weak and stagnant. At best, your economy suffers and your nation becomes a backwater; at worst, some other country comes and fucks your shit up. 19th century Japan anyone?

We, on the other hand, are the extreme opposite in the other direction now. Tower of Babel type shit. There has to be enough immigration to stay 'fit', but not so much that it challenges the dominant culture, which is our current situation. Singing the national anthem at a hockey game in Hindi is not ok. Immigrants from a similar/compatible culture, in reasonable numbers is ok. We see examples everywhere of what is not ok.

You forget that Japan shut itself off from the outside world in the 16th century and was only forced into contact with the world in the 19th century, the situation was more on the level of an alien invasion, and still they adapted. Also even after the 19th century how many immigrants did Japan let in? If you keep tight control on your immigration but continue to interact with the world your in the best position. It's North Korea vs. South Korea, I want to be the one with the booming industries and super hot chicks.

Didn't forget it, actually is my whole point. Because they turtled up, they were caught with their pants down and in no position to tell Perry and America to pound sand. They played a decent catch-up game, but look where it got them less than a century later - bombed to the stone age, occupied for decades with foreign ideologies imposed on them (eg liberalism/egalitarian BS) forcing them into extinction. They held out for a good while but almost 2 centuries later are now in the same boat as us, upside down demographic pyramid and jeets running their convenience stores. It's only a matter of time until they start giving them citizenship, they will probably be forced to by global finance.

Maybe with a little more openness in the 16th-19th, they would be on a different path in the 21st. Maybe we all would be, if the unipolar GAE world never happened because Japan was a force earlier on in the Pacific Rim.
